Background of the Study
Online book reservation systems play a pivotal role in facilitating timely access to library resources. At Federal University Birnin-Kebbi, these systems are designed to allow students to reserve books and other materials remotely, thereby reducing wait times and improving user satisfaction (Sani, 2023). The evolution of these systems reflects an ongoing shift towards digitalization in academic libraries, where ease of access and user convenience are prioritized (Gambo, 2024). A robust reservation system not only streamlines the borrowing process but also provides valuable data on user demand and borrowing patterns. However, several challenges, including system downtime, interface complexity, and occasional miscommunication between the system and library inventory, can negatively affect its effectiveness (Ibrahim, 2025). This study evaluates the operational efficiency of the online book reservation system, its impact on user satisfaction, and its role in ensuring that students have prompt access to required materials. By examining system performance, user interface design, and service reliability, the research aims to offer recommendations for enhancements that will improve the overall reservation experience.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of an online book reservation system at Federal University Birnin-Kebbi, users continue to encounter issues such as delayed confirmations, system errors, and user interface challenges. These shortcomings have resulted in diminished trust in the system and have adversely affected the timely access to academic resources (Sani, 2023). In addition, insufficient user support and infrequent system updates further complicate the process, leading to frustrations among students. The study seeks to systematically identify these operational deficiencies and evaluate their impact on overall user satisfaction. Addressing these issues is critical in ensuring the system can meet the library’s objectives of efficient resource allocation and enhanced user experience (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the operational efficiency of the online reservation system.

To identify common user challenges and system errors.

To propose improvements for system responsiveness and reliability.

Research Questions:

How effective is the online reservation system in meeting user needs?

What technical issues hinder its optimal performance?

What improvements can enhance the user experience?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically evaluates the online book reservation system, which is central to the effective functioning of academic libraries. The insights gained will guide system enhancements, ensuring improved user satisfaction and more efficient access to library resources. The findings will be beneficial for library administrators in developing strategies to refine the reservation process and support academic success (Gambo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the online book reservation system at Federal University Birnin-Kebbi and does not encompass other library services or digital platforms.

Definitions of Terms:

Online Book Reservation: A digital service enabling users to reserve library materials remotely.

System Efficiency: The effectiveness of a system in performing its intended functions.

User Satisfaction: The overall approval and contentment of users regarding a service.
